[19:02:54] <nacht> Oh man..a nap on Sunday. That was a scary memory.
[19:03:11] <vargas> ????
[19:03:54] <nacht> Memories of sleeping mid day to be able to wake up and work a midnight shift at Waffle House. I used to be a short order cook.
[19:05:11] <vargas> ahhh
[19:05:43] <vargas> I think Siren will be here by 8

[19:06:27] <vargas> hey hey
[19:06:35] <ancient> Yo.
[19:08:37] <ancient> Ok, loots from Danner's place...
[19:09:59] <ancient> Assorted gems, gold, art objects, etc., totalling about 3300 GP. Additionally, Vargas, you guys discovered that the third floor had two rooms behind the antechamber. The middle one served as the wizard's, and from that you were able to extract a number of useful things;
[19:16:07] <vargas> (I'm here. Just got back from the kitchen)
[19:16:46] <ancient> Where is your current spell book? I need that to know what spells you already have known.
[19:16:59] <vargas> One moment.
[19:17:06] <nacht> Any cool weapons or armor?
[19:17:52] <ancient> You picked up a +2 Longsword and a +1 Flaming longsword. And a +1 Chainmail and a +2 Breastplate.
[19:18:04] <nacht> sweeet
[19:18:21] <vargas> Son of a. Google lost the sheet I was making in prep for this Sunday.
[19:18:38] <ancient> Last link I got was this one: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqDXX-eecfTedElXaU11a3cybDJ2N21TWjNMNTNsTXc#gid=0
[19:19:17] <vargas> That is a complete copy. I will toggle the filter to show you everything instead of just what is prepared.
[19:19:50] <vargas> If you want to see what V doesn't know, toggle the data filter to see the zeros or blanks in the KNOWN column.
[19:20:08] <ancient> k.
[19:22:11] <ancient> Firefox seems to offer no access to the filtering scripts.
[19:22:34] <vargas> I use firefox. You should. Want to try something real quick?
[19:22:56] <ancient> Maybe I'm being overriden by another viewer. I just refreshed, and now the filter is deactivated.
[19:22:57] <vargas> I will teach you.
[19:23:12] <vargas> go to join.me in your browser
[19:23:28] <vargas> No .com or www.
[19:23:48] <ancient> Ok, there.
[19:23:54] <vargas> Click on JOIN
[19:24:14] <vargas> When it asks for a number, type in 442 118 775
[19:25:42] <ancient> Yeah, mind doesn't produce that pop-up when I try to click the down arrow. Actually, those arrows are grayed out. It's got to be an access thing...
[19:25:50] <vargas> Hmmm.
[19:26:07] <vargas> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqDXX-eecfTedElXaU11a3cybDJ2N21TWjNMNTNsTXc&usp=sharing
[19:26:10] <vargas> Try that link
[19:26:20] <vargas> It didn't have edit permission for you
[19:26:21] <ancient> Ok, those work.
[19:26:49] <vargas> Join.me is the fastest, lightweight session sharing tool I know of. Very handy.
[19:26:58] <ancient> Neat!
[19:27:10] <vargas> I can also give you mouse control.
[19:28:11] <vargas> Anyways, problem identified!
[19:29:09] <vargas> I guess since filters are saved, they force you to have edit permission
[19:30:58] <ancient> Hehehe, it seems you have not been fooling around. You've been collecting a pretty comprehensive list of spells.
[19:31:21] <vargas> Well, he is a Loremaster.
[19:31:31] <ancient> Hehehe.
[19:32:10] <ancient> But when I make a random spell book for you to find, you've already got most of the spells in it. A) takes the wind out of my sails, and B) makes any complaints of yours about spell access ring RATHER hollow. :-P
[19:32:41] <vargas> First off, you were looking at evocation stuff. And since the Sigilite was an evoker, it's to be expected.
[19:32:56] <vargas> Siggy gave me a ton of evoker stuff up to lvl 5.
[19:33:56] <ancient> Hehehe, yeah, but this dude WAS an evoker. Most of his crap was Evocation.
[19:34:01] <vargas> nodnod
[19:34:09] <ancient> And now I'm looking at your level 1 spell list. You know all but two of them already?
[19:35:03] <vargas> I think we found scrolls of the necro and ench stuff somewhere.
[19:35:11] <ancient> My word. This spell list is terrifying.
[19:36:03] <vargas> Occassionally when I loot an entire spellbook, you can see where I got the spell from.
[19:36:11] <nacht> Vargas eat Children!
[19:36:17] <nacht> Oh...wait..that's Magnus.
[19:36:29] <vargas> Everything else is either the Sigilite, scroll loot, or stuff from Herzland.
[19:36:47] <vargas> Or teleport and scry that came from the Ghost of Queen's Bay.
[19:36:59] <ancient> Yeah.
[19:37:07] <vargas> Rivet gave me some stuff from the Brass spellbook underneath Akor.
[19:37:47] <vargas> And I rolled for a bunch of stuff from Plinkerton. Illusions and transmutation. Got some winners, got some losers.
[19:37:50] <ancient> What does the actual number in the Known column signify?
[19:38:16] <vargas> Known is the sum of spellbook pages I have for that spell. So > 0 means V has a copy somewhere.
[19:38:19] <ancient> Oooh, wait, I get it.
[19:38:34] <vargas> Sometimes I have explicit duplicates, and it reflects that.
[19:39:05] <ancient> i'm with ya.
[19:40:13] <ancient> You're such a programmer. Rather than having a column that says "copies owned," you record the total number of pages it occupies across all spell books, and then mentally mod by the spell level.
[19:40:30] <vargas> Oh, I also looted a spellbook from a drow wizard Ben had.
[19:40:54] <vargas> V knows how to make a Black Fireball. No difference except it's black.
[19:40:59] <vargas> =)
[19:41:05] <ancient> Oooh.
[19:41:06] <ancient> Ok.
[19:41:28] <vargas> Gosh, that must have been 2 years ago now.
[19:41:28] <ancient> Anyway, I have an alternate plan for your spell loots, in light of this.
[19:41:34] <ancient> Are you ready to copy?
[19:41:42] <vargas> I am ready.
[19:41:53] <ancient> First of all, magic items: In addition to the gear noted above in answer to Nacht's question:
[19:42:17] <ancient> 1x Scroll, Stone Skin (CL10)
[19:42:18] <ancient> 1x Oil, Magic Weapon
[19:45:36] <nacht> any chance of finding the second gate ring?
[19:48:31] <ancient> From spell books, the following spells:
[19:48:32] <ancient> Obscure Object, Nondetection, Detect Scrying, Interposing Hand. The rest you already knew.
[19:48:32] <ancient> And from his research materials...
[19:48:32] <ancient> 90% complete research for Chain Lightning.
[19:48:40] <vargas> Sweet!
[19:49:21] <vargas> (Finding incomplete research for new spells is actually pretty neat idea)
[19:50:03] <ancient> Hehehe, danke. But it makes sense. It's also a good way to drop spells at your level from slightly lower level wizard NPCs.
[19:50:16] <ancient> ,roll 1d50
[19:50:16] <clockwork> Ancient: 45
[19:50:35] <vargas> It works works well with a Loremaster since V doesn't auto-discover new spells upon leveling anymore.
[19:50:57] <ancient> Exactly.
[19:51:44] <ancient> don't forget about that wand of MM. That's got CL 7, so 4-shot burst on each charge. And apparently, 45 charges left.
[19:51:53] <vargas> oh wow. Neat.
[19:52:04] <vargas> I will add this to the group loot page.
[19:52:15] <ancient> Miriam would love it, too.
[19:54:20] <nacht> Any chance on that second gate ring, Boss?
[19:56:33] <ancient> Oh. No, not where you all went.
[19:58:01] <nacht> rats
[19:59:17] <ancient> :-)
[19:59:29] <nacht> hmm.....
[19:59:49] <nacht> well, doesn't sound like a lot for Magnus. :)
[20:00:10] <vargas> I'm a crafter. I can turn other stuff into your stuff with enough time.
[20:00:19] <vargas> Like an arcane recycling machine.
[20:00:26] <ancient> On the contrary. Beyond the magic items, most of that loot is not useful except as assets to be liquidated, which is what Vargas does.
[20:00:31] <nacht> Sa'll good!
[20:01:01] <vargas> As the only person with appraisal skill, he gets salesman duty.
[20:01:02] <ancient> At this level of play, Nacht, that's the usual story. Most of the drops are too low level for your use. Your job is to sell them and use the resources to build stuff at your level.
[20:03:41] <ancient> (As a little rules thing, Nacht: you can generally sell an item for half its retail price. But interestingly, you can build an object for half its retail price in materials. Basically, this makes loot items tradeable one-for-one for the thing you actually want, as long as it is reasonable that the loot item is sellable.)
[20:06:10] <vargas> Nacho, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqDXX-eecfTedDktTDhQUmJfbTNVdE5temhnbXMxNlE&usp=sharing
[20:06:18] <vargas> That link is the team deathpool / bank.
[20:07:11] <vargas> The deposit box holds unclaimed, or group loot.
[20:07:38] <vargas> Nobody ever tells me who is carrying the two flaming bows, so I keep them on that sheet.
[20:16:07] <nacht> That's cool.
[20:17:39] <vargas> Okay, stuff is recorded.
[20:17:46] <vargas> Even found my misplaced spellsheet.
[20:18:13] <vargas> Now, Nacho, if you want to discuss stuff ICly now is a great time.
[20:18:38] <vargas> GM, if you want to play Brrk or something, that works too.
[20:18:49] * Ancient will lurk. Brrk lurk.
[20:20:51] * Vargas will sketching with a charcoal pencil some of the sights and visions they've seen in the last couple days. Most of them look like scenes from the Path between this world, and that of Shadows.
[20:21:40] <nacht> huh...crossbow is a simple weapon. <<
[20:21:43] <vargas> ,roll 1d20+15
[20:21:43] <clockwork> Vargas: 24:9+15
[20:22:08] <vargas> (indeed)
[20:23:51] <vargas> "Magnus, may I have a word with you for a minute?"
[20:24:16] =-= Nacht is now known as Magnus_
[20:24:35] <ancient> Wait, I just remembered, I will not be lurking. I have to be up at 0400 tomorrow.
[20:24:37] * Magnus_ nods, "Certainly." He follows the man.
[20:25:21] <vargas> "Where are you going to go next? When we are gone, I mean. You should never return to Akor, at least."
[20:25:22] <magnus_> (So a long distance one...but hmmm....the time it takes to reload a crossbow might be a hinderance)
[20:28:21] <magnus_> "I am not sure. There are plenty of other places I can wander. Maybe south."
[20:28:50] <magnus_> "The Kervic situation proves I can not return to the north without being in danger, and Akor for that matter."
[20:29:09] <vargas> "That's a possibility. I would avoid the Kervic territories."
[20:32:43] <magnus_> "Although, I'm not usually worried about that sort of thing and I'm sure I will be back in Akor at some point...It was my home for many years and Duramas is there.
[20:34:18] <vargas> "Faisal's network has too many allies there, and you are sort of famous. If those ninja women of his wanted to, they could find you and take revenge."
[20:35:06] <vargas> "We let Danner as a kind of ransom in and of itself for your safety, but don't count on that from Faisal's lackeys."
[20:35:57] <magnus_> "I've never really worried about that sort of thing. Although, I was left for dead by the orc horde...that put a damper on me."
[20:38:05] <vargas> "It's up to you how much you want to worry about something that is beyond your control. But I would not take it too lightly. Revenge can be a long game, and we won't be around to help you. Acadia, and Brrk might, but not I or the others."
[20:38:09] <magnus_> (incidentally, I don't think Magnus can use a hammer without the penalty)
[20:40:33] <magnus_> "I reckon Acadia will wander back into the forest. Not sure where Brrk will go."
[20:41:21] <magnus_> "I'll also have to find a way to acquire some more gold."
[20:41:30] <vargas> "Oh?"
[20:43:32] <vargas> "Well, long term you will have a share from my salt mine and other ventures. But having your own plan is a good idea."
[20:43:34] <magnus_> "I can make food and water, Vargas. But most room and board won't let you stay there without some monetary payment."
[20:46:19] <magnus_> "Actually, I can shape stone too, now that I think about it."
[20:46:37] <vargas> "I know. But I'm sure that you can find a way to make it work."
[20:46:45] * Magnus_ nods.
[20:47:06] <vargas> "A man with your talent should have no trouble finding a home wherever he goes."
[20:50:16] <magnus_> "Others always need help, Vargas."
[20:50:51] * Vargas nods.
[20:52:14] <vargas> "So. What else?"
[20:53:09] <magnus_> "Not much. What time period do you believe you will be back to after the whump?"
[20:54:16] <vargas> "Home. Always home. A thousand years from now. Into Thibble Cobblepot's room where I just revealed to him my salt find."
[20:54:31] <vargas> "Wow, it's been so long. It's going to be a shock to be back home."
[20:55:20] <magnus_> "I gave my mule away, which works since I won't head into Akor to get her."
[20:55:52] <vargas> "How long have you had that mule? Did it have a name?"
[20:56:06] <magnus_> "Although, she is on a farm...I think I will go look for her."
[20:56:22] <magnus_> "She did. I had her for a while."
[20:56:40] <vargas> "I have two horses. Blue and Bella."
[20:57:13] <magnus_> (I can't believe I said he got rid of his mule)
[20:57:18] <vargas> "Miriam has a pet horse, and a pet falcon. She named them after two herzish words without naming that they stand for different kinds of sausage."
[20:57:25] <magnus_> (I'd never give up an animal)
[20:57:27] <vargas> "Miriam also has a pet wyvern."
[20:57:36] <vargas> "A baby wyvern."
[20:58:01] * Magnus_ blinks at this. "How is that possible?"
[20:58:52] <vargas> "She stole an egg during a whump to this strange island. The party ended up killing a family of wyverns, and she took an egg from the nest before they left."
[20:59:26] * Magnus_ hmmms... "What color is it?"
[21:00:03] <vargas> "I don't know. I have never seen it. You see, sometimes the Whump doesn't take everyone. Usually at least one person is missing."
[21:00:39] <vargas> "This island is unique in that it is one of the few places that the Whump revisits, and I have never seen it. The Whump simply will not take me to Kaloon island."
[21:00:51] <magnus_> "So..why would I stay here if you all whump away? Does everyone go back to their origins?"
[21:00:56] <vargas> "But it has taken them there multiple times, and during different eras."
[21:01:14] <vargas> "Yes. Since this is your home period, the return won't take you anywhere."
[21:02:29] <magnus_> "Actually, now that I think about it, if I am to stay here I might offer my strong arm services to the farmer that has my mule until I can work off that payment. I'm sure they could use a farmhand."
[21:03:16] <vargas> "I think that's absurd. How much money are you going to make on a farm? How long would it take to pay off a mule?"
[21:04:02] <magnus_> "How much money am I going to make travelling the road? I don't usually require a payment for my services."
[21:04:29] <vargas> "Does that stop you from taking a donation? Or trading for a service like shelter?"
[21:05:26] <magnus_> "No. So I could of course trade a service for the mule. I've just never worked a farm before, and life is about experiences, Vargas."
[21:05:52] <vargas> "It's hard, hard work. I will tell you that much."
[21:06:15] * Magnus_ looks from his size to Vargas'.
[21:06:17] <vargas> "I was born the son of a guildsman, but I'm closer to a farmer than a merchant or noble."
[21:06:49] <magnus_> "Hard work is good for a person."
[21:07:19] * Vargas points at his hat. "That's why I have a belt buckle on my hat instead of stars, or feathers, or pins."
[21:07:52] * Magnus_ nods.
[21:09:01] <vargas> (brb, rain has stopped and I want to walk Oreo)
[21:09:16] <magnus_> (right)
[21:24:21] <vargas> back
[21:25:19] <magnus_> (wb)
[21:27:00] <vargas> (I really don't have anything else that we haven't discussed either OOCly, or via the email of my idea)
[21:27:20] <magnus_> (ditto)
[21:30:08] -->| Sirens (~Adium@ip68-105-1-229.br.br.cox.net) has joined #beyondshadowrun
[21:30:25] <sirens> (Sorry guys! I got held up.)
[21:30:30] <vargas> +2 Longsword
[21:30:30] <vargas> +1 Flaming Longsword
[21:30:30] <vargas> +1 Chainmail
[21:30:30] <vargas> +2 Breastplate
[21:30:30] <vargas> Scroll, Stone Skin (CL10)
[21:30:30] <vargas> Oil, Magic Weapon
[21:30:30] <vargas> 90% complete research for Chain Lightning
[21:30:30] <vargas> Wand of Magic Missile CL7 45 charges
[21:30:30] <vargas> 3300 in gp
[21:30:38] <vargas> That's the loot from the Danner raid.
[21:30:56] <sirens> Nice
[21:31:00] <vargas> (I hope you kicked him in the nads, and took his gun. Oh, not that kind of hold up I supposed)
[21:31:45] <sirens> (Lol. Fortunately not.)
[21:32:13] <vargas> (And I think your brother went to sleep since he's up at 4 am tomorrow)
[21:32:24] <magnus_> (That totally reminds me of Monster Squad when the kid kicks the wolfman in the gonnads.)
[21:33:15] <magnus_> (But...I'm a dork. So yeah)
[21:34:06] <sirens> (That's a terrible hour!)
[21:34:40] <sirens> (Also, dorks are underrated)
[21:35:02] <vargas> (both true statements)
[21:35:27] <vargas> (Now, did you have anything you wanted to cover Acadia?)
[21:36:07] <sirens> (Spells would be nice, if possible. I'd happily take some advice on how to prepare for this next deal.
[21:36:52] <vargas> Well, I'm not really as sure this time around because I don't know ICly what we're going to be up against.
[21:37:28] <sirens> I don't have any idea either way, really. But the temple is mostly stone, correct?
[21:37:39] <vargas> We don't even have an evac plan like last time. If Caleb shows up, Shadow Walk would be suicide.
[21:37:47] <vargas> I think so.
[21:38:29] <sirens> Is Caleb from the shadow realm?
[21:38:55] <vargas> Caleb is an evil outsider. And chaotic. Most likely a demon of some kind.
[21:39:05] <vargas> So the Plane of Shadow is probably not his home.
[21:39:13] <magnus_> I think he's chaotic atleast.
[21:39:24] <vargas> But with his kind of power, he could probably knock us off the Path or something.
[21:39:38] <sirens> Gotcha.
[21:40:18] <sirens> Well, I guess I'd like to get an idea of our surroundings, but otherwise I'll probably take spells about like I did last time.
[21:40:52] <magnus_> You did a great job with that shape wood, by the way.
[21:42:11] <sirens> Oh thank you. It was convenient. :)
[21:42:34] <sirens> Do we have any kinda plan going into this, ICly?
[21:42:36] <vargas> The druid's lockpick.
[21:42:53] <vargas> Did you ever get my email if V's idea about the coffin?
[21:43:33] <sirens> Hm… Let me check
[21:47:35] <sirens> Catching up on past emails, uno momento
[21:51:02] <sirens> Okay!
[21:51:07] <vargas> Found it?
[21:51:52] <sirens> Yup. And read up on everything. So I will prepare fog and faerie dust/fire to cast in case.
[21:52:29] <sirens> Otherwise, I'm planning on bringing some wood and stone manipulation, buffs (as always), and some offense
[21:56:07] <sirens> Also, what's the bit about chain lightning research?
[21:57:13] <vargas> Well, it's a little involved. Vargas doesn't get new spells when he levels. He has to find them. And Ancient is a little annoyed when he has a list of spells from a slightly lower level wizard, and I know a lot of the stuff he planned on giving me.
[21:57:21] <vargas> (wizard list is friggin complicated)
[21:57:57] <vargas> So in order to give me spells from wizards that aren't as good as Vargas, he's going to drop "research". All V has to do is spend money and time to finish the spell, and learn it himself.
[21:59:01] <vargas> So instead of 6000 gp, it will take 600 gp for him to finish researching Chain Lightning.
[21:59:25] <sirens> Oh. Cool. Is Chain Lightning different from Call?
[22:00:14] <vargas> Yeah. Basically I pick a target, zap them for up to 15d6, and then it arcs. It can hit anybody else within a 30' radius that I want (but avoid friendlies).
[22:01:04] <sirens> Ohh nice!
[22:01:10] <sirens> So why do you have to find your spells?
[22:01:47] <vargas> Unlike divine casters, wizards have to collect spells and write them into books.
[22:02:45] <sirens> Do you not just assume that's what they're doing as they level?
[22:04:09] <vargas> If I was just leveling as a wizard, I'd get 2 free spells per level. But for some reason, since Vargas is a wizard / loremaster, the loremaster class does not get new spell freebies.
[22:04:25] <sirens> Oh interesting
[22:06:23] <vargas> Since producing spellbooks is so bothersome for GMs, I usually only get spells two ways.
[22:06:29] <vargas> Either somebody drops a scroll in loot.
[22:06:52] <vargas> Or, if I haven't gotten a new spell in 6 RL months, I end up dropping something in one of my own sessions.
[22:08:48] <sirens> That seems pretty fair. So if you get a scroll of a spell, can you add that spell to your spellbook?
[22:09:00] <vargas> If it is an arcane scroll, yeah.
[22:10:01] <sirens> Gotcha
[22:10:32] <vargas> The wizard we took down last week was an evoker. So I didn't really get much out of it because the Sigilite already gave me a bunch of evocation spells for that same spell range.
[22:11:03] <vargas> V has almost no necromancy or enchantment spells since those fields don't exist in his homeland. They are myth.
[22:11:30] <vargas> If people knew that he had divination, enchantment, or necromancy he could be branded a heretic.
[22:12:02] <sirens> Ahh…. So does he avoid those spells?
[22:12:03] <magnus_> So when Magnus does something that involves necromancy then V is at a loss?
[22:12:23] <vargas> Not so much at a loss as insanely curious.
[22:13:08] <vargas> Sort of, Siren. He's very afraid of using necromancy because of the stigma. Enchantment like Charm seems suspicious to him. But he has no qualms about using divination.
[22:14:12] <sirens> I see
[22:15:34] <vargas> Come to think of it, I don't think he's ever used a single necromancy spell.
[22:15:40] <vargas> He knows a few, but he's never used them.
[22:16:00] <vargas> He's never used a charm spell. But he has used Sleep, and Heroism.
[22:16:11] <sirens> What was the finger of death spell he used on that wizard?
[22:16:28] <vargas> Desintigrate is a transmutation.
[22:17:47] <sirens> Ohh
[22:18:05] <vargas> For wizards, the school of magic is really important.
[22:18:46] <vargas> For V, enchantment and necromancy are restricted schools. I have to spend 2 spell slots instead of 1 in order to prepare enchantment or necromancy. And I cannot use his ring to cast any of those spells spontaneously.
[22:18:48] <magnus_> I think Slay Living is the only necromancy spell Magnus has cast
[22:19:36] <sirens> I see. Interesting.
[22:21:29] <vargas> Back in V's homeland, all spells over lvl 3 are hoarded and hidden generally because they are "too precious". So that's where my collection starts to dwindle.
[22:21:50] <vargas> Darn wizards don't trust anybody. =)
[22:21:55] <sirens> lol
[22:21:59] <sirens> He should do a recon mission!
[22:22:18] <sirens> If they ever get whumped to his time, Serri could go all ninja and infiltrate
[22:22:33] <sirens> Dungeons and Shadow Run
[22:23:40] <vargas> He could, but there aren't that many wizards as strong as him. The way Ancient has his world set up, 1-5 is heroic, 6-10 is paragon, 11-15 is legendary, and 16-20 is epic. A lvl 10 might be among the best in his country. A lvl 15 is among the best in a given 1000 year era. A lvl 20 is the greatest to ever live.
[22:23:58] <vargas> hehe, Serribon thinks that V's people are primitive barbarians.
[22:24:23] <sirens> lol. Really? Why?
[22:24:23] <vargas> Compared to the Andropoleans of his and Miriam's era, they are sorta.
[22:24:38] <vargas> Andropoleans are like the Romans.
[22:25:00] <vargas> Herzland is like medieval germany. Humanity lost a lot of technology and knowledge in the Cataclysm.
[22:25:22] <vargas> In some ways Herzland is more advanced, but they don't have things like aquaduct plumbing.
[22:26:18] <sirens> Ahh
[22:30:12] <vargas> Where are you going to look for fey?
[22:30:17] <vargas> What do you want to learn from them?
[22:32:52] <sirens> Serri gave A a map and indicated a couple towns to the northwest that might have druids. I think she's really just looking for the next step. She'd been pretty content until she met this group. Not a lot challenged her. Now she feels like she's not strong enough, and she wants to know how to get to the next level
[22:32:55] <sirens> so to speak
[22:33:32] <magnus_> Magnus just needs to chill till he figures out his next move.
[22:33:58] <magnus_> Which is why I'm thinking manual labor till he gets his mule back.
[22:34:22] <vargas> One day Siren might want to go to the feywild. The fey have their own Plane of reality.
[22:36:46] <sirens> That would probably do her a lot of good. Though she doesn't really know a lot about the other planes. They're still kind of unclear to her.
[22:37:27] <vargas> They are a mystery to everyone. V only knows that they exist, and some general ideas about what lives there and the properties of those planes.
[22:37:34] <vargas> But nobody has done any planar travel.
[22:37:57] <vargas> It's sort of a big theme that Ancient reserves to himself for whumps. He wants to control how it is introduced to the game.
[22:38:32] <sirens> That makes sense. He probably has a grand plan of somekind
[22:38:34] <sirens> some kin
[22:38:37] <sirens> some kind
[22:38:40] <sirens> third time's a charm
[22:40:13] <magnus_> Magnus is pretty sure his Goddess exists on a separate plane. He envisioned Caleb in beast form on a separate plane too.
[22:40:52] <vargas> All Outsiders like the gods, or demons and whatnot have a home in different planes. Even if you killed them on Earth, they'd reform in their home plane.
[22:41:00] <sirens> Ah, yup. That's coming, then. Btw, does anyone know what's up after this arc concludes? Is it back to round robin?
[22:41:10] <vargas> The farther a Plane is from the Prime Material, the more alien the outsider.
[22:41:19] <vargas> Yes, we're going back to the round robin format.
[22:41:33] <vargas> The rule is, you start a whump, and at the end of the night everybody goes home.
[22:41:35] <sirens> Okay. Which planes are closest?
[22:41:40] <sirens> Gotcha
[22:41:41] <vargas> Whether the run finishes or not
[22:41:58] <sirens> Oh I see
[22:41:59] <vargas> The closest planes are mirrors of the Prime. The Plane of Shadow, and the Ethereal Plane.
[22:42:23] <vargas> Then you have the Elemental Planes. Fire, Water, Air, Earth.
[22:42:35] <vargas> The Astral Plane which binds all planes to all others.
[22:42:49] <vargas> Then as you get farther out, you run into abstract planes.
[22:42:49] <sirens> Okay. How many planes are there? Or types of planes? And what's the farthest out?
[22:43:03] <sirens> Ah
[22:43:12] <vargas> Mechanus, the Plane of Law. The Abyss, the Plane of Evil.
[22:43:35] <sirens> Hm.
[22:44:09] <magnus_> I gotta pass out you two. Work in the morning.
[22:44:25] <vargas> http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/environment.html#_the-planes
[22:44:29] <vargas> Here you go, Siren.
[22:44:35] <vargas> Night Nacho
[22:44:55] <sirens> Oh man! Awesome, thank you
[22:44:57] <magnus_> nightie night
[22:45:08] |<-->
[22:45:31] <vargas> There is 1 plane for every kind of alignment.
[22:45:53] <vargas> Lawful Good, Chaotic Good, Nuetral Good, True Nuetral, Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, etc...
[22:46:02] <sirens> Oh wow
[22:46:41] <sirens> That sounds like a handful
[22:47:14] <vargas> Oh! Here we go.
[22:47:22] <vargas> http://www.pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Great_Beyond
[22:47:45] <vargas> Now, each Plane is different based on the edition of the game. And I'm sure that Ancient has his own vision planned.
[22:48:06] <vargas> But that page is how they are handled by Paizo for their standard campaign setting.
[22:48:27] <sirens> Gotcha
[22:49:47] <sirens> Well that gives me a better idea of how they exist, at least. That's useful. Btw, at some point A may want to get with V about his magic. Just kind of a Q and A that can happen at any point, if you're up for it. Not tonight, of course. It's probably close to your bed time and I have to pack
[22:49:49] -->| Rivet_ (~Miranda@r75-110-115-242.rmntcmtc02.rcmtnc.ab.dh.suddenlink.net) has joined #beyondshadowrun
[22:49:52] <vargas> They can have weird effects too. Like some have relative gravity, or no gravity at all.
[22:50:02] <sirens> Oh
[22:50:15] <sirens> That would be an interesting encounter
[22:50:18] <vargas> In some Magic doesn't work, or is impaired. Other planes magic is enhanced. Like Cold spells are useless in the plane of Fire.
[22:50:36] <vargas> Hi Rivet
[22:50:40] <rivet_> hey
[22:50:52] <sirens> Hey Rivet! How was work?
[22:51:07] <sirens> Geez, that's so complicated.
[22:51:09] <vargas> Tonight is fine if you want. I'm usually up until midnight on Sundays anyways. And I'm still the first person in to work on Monday. =)
[22:51:14] <sirens> Somebody spent a lot of time on this.
[22:51:14] <rivet_> it was OK. no major problems and it went by fairly quickly
[22:51:24] <sirens> lol. That's impressive.
[22:51:28] <rivet_> what're we on about?
[22:51:30] <sirens> Oh good.
[22:52:00] <vargas> Siren, definately. Planes are a rich source of setting material dating back to the start of DnD. It's a place for high level adventure that doesn't otherwise make sense when you can topple kings.
[22:52:23] <vargas> I'm telling Siren about Planes in DnD.
[22:52:24] <rivet_> and, technically, it's where the low-level adventures happen, too
[22:52:50] <rivet_> Oooo. we oughta play Planescape some time. that's a crazy-fun setting
[22:53:11] <sirens> Planescape?
[22:53:25] <sirens> (There is so much to the world of DnD/Pathfinder that I don't know!)
[22:54:14] <vargas> Planescape is a campaign setting that is almost entirely in the Planes.
[22:54:41] <vargas> It's very Sliders, or Doctor Who.
[22:55:48] <sirens> Ahh okay. I haven't seen Sliders, but I've watched a little Doctor Who.
[22:56:01] * Vargas (IC) is currently sketching pictures of scenes from the Path as they left the burning castle of Danner Kervic using a charcoal pencil and a sketch pad.
[22:56:09] <sirens> Well, V, if you want to do a little bit tonight, I will try to multitask while I pack
[22:56:18] <sirens> and on that note
[22:56:21] =-= Sirens is now known as Acadia
[22:57:05] * Acadia comes wandering in, considers Vargas for a moment, and then takes a seat next to him.
[22:57:21] <acadia> (By the way, Riv, you're welcome to play, too. We're going to do just a bit of RP)
[22:57:42] * Acadia watches Vargas draw for a moment.
[22:58:22] <vargas> "Oh, hey there."
[22:58:29] <vargas> "What do you think?"
[22:58:37] * Vargas holds it to give her a better look.
[23:00:23] * Acadia cocks her head to the side, taking in the pictures. She nods her approval.
[23:01:31] <acadia> "How does your magic work, Wizard?"
[23:01:49] * Vargas smiles. He flips it back around and continues. He ponders your question.
[23:02:07] <vargas> "What do you mean?"
[23:02:24] <rivet_> (Planescape is based in a demiplane/city called Sigil that, somehow, metaphysically sits at the hub of nearly all the other planes. So, interdimensional travel is very common, even for very low-powered people and you can find just about every sort of sentient creature going about its business there: Demons, angels, even weirder things. But no (or at least no actively-worshipped) gods. The being that rules Sig
[23:02:25] <rivet_> And nobody argues with the Lady of Pain)
[23:03:09] <acadia> (Ohhh we've gone to Sigil in another campaign I'm playing in.)
[23:03:37] * Acadia thinks for a moment. "Well, like how did you get your magic? Who taught you? Where does it come from?"
[23:04:02] <rivet_> (ah, neat. If you ever get a chance, run down a copy and play Planescape: Torment. It's a old CRPG, and generally considered one of the best D&D video games ever crafted)
[23:04:44] <acadia> (Neat! What system is it on?)
[23:04:51] <rivet_> (PC)
[23:05:03] * Vargas reaches into his pack, and produces book bound with iron and overlaid in silver with a small lock.
[23:05:26] <acadia> (Ohhh. Cool.)
[23:05:28] * Vargas undoes the lock with a word, and fans out the pages which are filled with script and diagrams.
[23:05:50] * Acadia looks at the book blankly.
[23:06:06] <vargas> "This is where a wizard's magic comes from. Or if you want to be specific, this is our roadmap."
[23:06:45] <vargas> "I'm sure you've noticed that every morning I spend an hour going through my books, and chant things while making motions with my hands."
[23:06:59] * Acadia ponders the book, listening to V.
[23:07:25] <rivet_> (you can buy it here: http://www.gog.com/gamecard/planescape_torment and I'd recommend it. Not only are they officially-licensed to sell it, they keep a copy in their cloud, it's DRM-free, and runs in a packager that sets it up to work on modern windows. About every 6 months, the old Interplay D&D games go on sale for about a third of the price - which is a fantastic)
[23:07:33] <vargas> "When I do that, I am really casting the spells in these books. When I am nearly done, I pause the spell. It is nearly complete, just waiting for a key word or motion to be unleashed."
[23:08:21] * Acadia starts to nod slowly. "But how can a book tell you how to do it?"
[23:08:34] <vargas> "These spells are formulas. Patterns and guides that have been discovered through research and experimentation over thousands of years by the wizards who came before me."
[23:09:29] <vargas> "Hmm, no. No one could just pick up my book and learn. It requires years of training to ever learn how to read it."
[23:09:50] * Acadia purses her lips.
[23:10:21] <acadia> "Lizard Elf says that you met someone with my magic, once."
[23:11:03] <vargas> "I did. She killed me, actually. And then she reincarnated me as an elf."
[23:11:16] <acadia> "Why did she kill you?"
[23:12:37] <vargas> "I was polymorphed into a snail, and that was her idea of restoring me. She was a dryad, and I offended her because I damaged her tree while I was trying to get Serribon's attention. It was impossible to talk while I was a snail. So I shot an acid dart to get his attention, and it hurt her tree."
[23:14:06] * Acadia listens with a cocked eyebrow and laughs. "Why were you a snail?"
[23:15:40] * Vargas laughs, "Well, this is turning into a story isn't it? Well, I was investigating the theft of a priceless relic. So I broke into the home of another wizard, and I was captured. After his animated furniture nearly beat me to death, I hid by playing dead. When he came home, I tried to negociate but he tried to poison me with tea. When that failed, he turned me into a snail, and threw me in...
[23:15:40] * Vargas ...a dungeon."
[23:17:19] <acadia> "…..."
[23:17:28] <vargas> "I live a charmed life."
[23:19:16] * Acadia looks at Vargas with a perplexed expression. "You guys do weird things." She around the room. "I need to find a nature caster like me."
[23:19:23] <vargas> "Anyhow, the druid I met was a dryad. She lived on the edge of a desert by a magic oasis. And I have reason to believe that the dryad was the reincarnation of Cassandra's long, long dead sister. Cassandra was an elven princess, we think, who was a Whumper like us."
[23:20:31] <vargas> "Hmm. Another druid. Where did you learn then, if not from another druid?"
[23:21:59] * Acadia get s a fuzzy expression as Vargas references things she knows nothing about. Who's Cassandra? And her dead sister? She refocuses when he asks his question, and looks at him with surprise. "The fey taught me."
[23:23:05] <vargas> "The fey? They taught you?" This boggles him. "What kind?"
[23:26:04] * Acadia shrugs. "Nymphs, Dryads, Sprites. They lived in the swamp where my tribe stayed. The gnomes were always afraid of things, but the fey weren't."
[23:27:42] <vargas> "Huh. Really."
[23:27:57] * Acadia looks at Vargas.
[23:28:04] <vargas> "I really haven't heard of anyone having prolonged contact with the fey without it turning into a tragedy or a horror story."
[23:28:20] <vargas> "My people are terribly afraid of all feylai."
[23:29:31] * Acadia looks confused. "Why? They're just nature spirits. They're powerful, but they just live and survive, mostly."
[23:30:01] <vargas> "Because we don't know any better, and people fear what they don't understand."
[23:32:40] * Acadia makes an "Ohhh" face and nods. "The gnomes of my tribe were afraid of everything. They didn't understand. Instead of learning, they just spread myths about the "Golden City."
[23:32:51] <vargas> "Humans are not like elves or gnomes. We are not magical creatures bound to the land. Nature is neither our friend, nor our foe. But she is terribly unforgiving."
[23:32:55] * Vargas nods.
[23:33:05] <vargas> "I understand, I think."
[23:35:04] * Acadia nods. "Nature doesn't care about anything."
[23:36:15] <vargas> "Yes, but it doesn't feel that when when you tend a field, and everything you grow has died from a lack of rain, and half the village will die of starvation and disease."
[23:37:53] * Acadia listens and ponders. She shrugs and nods.
[23:38:13] <rivet_> (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-torpedo-dolphins-20130518,0,7621822.story)
[23:38:36] <acadia> "But if you learn, you can make the rain yourself.
[23:39:11] <vargas> "You can make it rain?"
[23:39:43] <vargas> "Oh, wait. I guess you could. Maybe like that town we visit where it always rains."
[23:40:02] <acadia> (Navy dolphins??)
[23:40:02] <vargas> "There is one village we've been to where it has rained every day for an entire year."
[23:40:16] <vargas> (Don't tell me you don't know about the navy dolphins...)
[23:40:45] * Acadia quirks an eyebrow at Vargas, then nods. "I guess like that. I can make water, but one day I will make it rain."
[23:40:59] <acadia> (I have never heard of military dolphins before.)
[23:41:31] <rivet_> (yeah. they've been training them for diver interdiction and mine detection since the 60's)
[23:41:38] <vargas> "I know the Andropoleans used to make these artificial rivers."
[23:42:02] <vargas> "They could make these channels, and route water into them to feed their cities when a river didn't exist."
[23:42:40] <acadia> "With magic?"
[23:42:50] <acadia> (That is crazy and awesome)
[23:42:55] <vargas> "No. They dug trenches with slave labor."
[23:43:12] <vargas> "Hundreds and thousands of slaves with shovels."
[23:43:33] <rivet_> (seriously. though they don't use them for mine-sweeping as much anymore, due to bad publicity)
[23:43:42] <acadia> Acadia tries to imagine those numbers.
[23:45:27] <vargas> "I am not sure where to find the kinds of teachers you are looking for, except to head for the Wild places of the world."
[23:46:51] * Acadia nods. "Lizard Elf told be about some towns at the edge of the deserts. I'm going to look there."
[23:49:44] <vargas> "If I learn of any in the future, I will share it when I see you again."
[23:49:51] <vargas> "I just don't know when that will be."
[23:50:24] * Acadia nods.
[23:50:32] <acadia> "What is it like, when you get pulled away?"
[23:51:09] <vargas> "It feels a lot like my teleport spell. But weirder."
[23:51:34] <vargas> "Sometimes you get a little warning. You feel the distortion before you get pulled."
[23:52:11] <vargas> "And sometimes you have no warning. That's why I made this chrono. I can tell when they are coming so it doesn't take me when I'm naked in bed."
[23:52:27] <vargas> "I haven't had the money to make more, otherwise I'd make one for all of you."
[23:52:53] * Acadia looks at V's chrono. "How did you make it?"
[23:54:30] <vargas> It is a pocketwatch made of brass, nickel, and silver with an inky black interior that is deeper than the watch should be. "Well, first I had to create a spell to do it. Then, once I had the spell, I figured out how to make this do it for me since it costs talisman quartz to cast the spell. Not unlike your binding. Just cheaper."
[23:55:28] * Acadia thinks about this for a moment. She shrugs.
[23:55:43] <acadia> "Petite doesn't like teleporting, but he doesn't remember it for long."
[23:55:52] <vargas> "Spells sort of tell you how to make them into objects. I cannot make a sword do this. It must be an object like this."
[23:57:14] * Acadia narrows her eyes at the Chrono. "I guess I kind of get it...."
